Wizard Nebula NGC 7380
The Wizard Nebula (NGC 7380) is an emission nebula that surrounds a young open star cluster in the constellation Cepheus. Located approximately 7,200 light-years away within the Milky Way galaxy, it is an active star-forming region. The glowing clouds are shaped by the intense radiation and powerful stellar winds from the young, hot stars at its core.
At only about 4 to 5 million years old, the cluster within the nebula is still young and embedded in the gas and dust from which it formed. The central engine of this cosmic activity is a massive, double-star system known as DH Cephei. The intense ultraviolet radiation from these stars ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas, causing it to glow brightly. The nebula spans about 100 to 110 light-years across, which is larger than the angular size of a full moon in the night sky.
The nebula’s popular name comes from its resemblance to a medieval sorcerer or wizard, complete with a pointed hat and outstretched arms, though this requires some imagination to see.
